What Do I Have To Do To Get Started?
In the event that you choose to commence treatment with Fertility Solutions, it is necessary that the following be done:
-
If you don't have one already, get a referral from your local doctor to a Fertility Solutions Specialist. Ask that the referral is marked “Indefinite” as referrals marked in this way will last a lifetime.
-
Once you have the referral, phone the rooms of the specialist (Dr's. George Bogiatzis, Kirsten Morrow or James Orford) to make an appointment. As the waiting time to see a fertility specialist can be up to 6 weeks, we recommend that you make this appointment as soon as possible. You can always cancel this appointment if it is not needed
-
Have the required screening tests (see below)
Tests that are needed before you start treatment:
- Trial Wash also referred to as a Semen Analysis:
It is necessary for the male partner to have a semen analysis with Fertility Solutions. If you have had a trial wash at Fertility Solutions or another accredited Fertility Clinic within the previous 12 months and copies of the results can be obtained, you may not need to have this test repeated. If you have not had this test within the past 12 months then it must be done before any treatment commences. To make an appointment and arrange to collect a semen pack please call 1300 337 845 at least two days before you want do have the test.
- Screening Blood Tests:
Some of these are necessary for both partners i.e. Hepatitis B, Hepatitis C, HIV, Syphilis, Cystic Fibrosis and Chromosome Analysis (results take up to 5 weeks and treatment will not commence until these have been reviewed). Some of these are mandatory such as Hepatitis B, C, HIV and Syphilis, whilst some are highly recommended such as the Cystic Fibrosis Screen. One in 25 Australians carries an abnormal gene for cystic fibrosis. If both members of a couple carry an abnormal gene there is a one in 4 chance that any children will have cystic fibrosis, which is a serious long term medical condition affecting the lungs and digestive systems. Chromosome Analysis is also highly recommended. As many as 5 % of couples seeking fertility treatment will have undiagnosed abnormalities that can be passed on. If you have a problem, we would arrange genetic counselling so that the risks for any children as well as any additional testing options can be explored prior to treatment.
- Ovarian Reserve BloodTest:
This test must be done before you start treatment known as an anit-mullerian hormone (AMH). The results of this test will help with your treatment planning. This can be done at the same time as your screening blood test.
- Ultrasound Assessment of the Pelvis +/- assessment of the fallopian tubes:
A baseline ultrasound assessment of the female pelvis is highly recommended before any treatment is commenced. Whether you need a tubal assessment will depend upon the type of treatment you are having. These tests should be done between day 5-10 of your cycle.
- Pap Smear: For women, we ensure that they have had a recent pap smear and that the results of this test are known.
